Open-heart Mitral Valve Repair in pets is one of the most complex procedures in veterinary surgery. It requires highly specialized knowledge and the use of a Heart–Lung Machine (Cardiopulmonary Bypass) to maintain blood circulation and oxygen exchange while the heart is stopped. Historically, degenerative mitral valve disease in pets was managed primarily through medication to control symptoms. However, for severe cases, surgical repair offers a significant opportunity to extend the patient's lifespan and drastically improve their quality of life.

An International Breakthrough

In a historic milestone for Thai veterinary medicine, Kasetsart University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (KUVTH) Hua Hin collaborated with the world-renowned cardiac surgery team from JASMINE Veterinary Cardiovascular Medical Center, Japan, led by Prof. Masami Uechi. Together, they successfully performed Thailand's first-ever open-heart mitral valve repair in canine patients, elevating the country's advanced cardiac care to international standards.

Current Progress and Future Outlook

The team has already successfully completed two surgical cases, proving the readiness and capability of Thai veterinarians in managing advanced cardiac interventions. This partnership also provides local pet owners access to highly complex treatments without the need to travel abroad. Currently, KUVTH Hua Hin has begun consultations and patient screenings for future surgical candidates, marking a concrete step forward in international academic cooperation.
