accredited to international standards by the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Kasetsart University, is the first and only veterinary education institution in Thailand and the ASEAN region to receive international accreditation from the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council (AVBC). In addition, the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program is also accredited by the Veterinary Council of Thailand.

• Graduates are eligible to apply directly for registration to practice veterinary medicine in Australia, New Zealand, and other countries that recognize AVBC standards, with exemption from additional professional assessment or licensing examinations.
• A comprehensive 6-year program emphasizing the integration of theoretical knowledge with intensive hands-on clinical training, taught at both the Bangkhen Campus (Bangkok) and Kamphaeng Saen Campus (Nakhon Pathom).

Program Objectives

This curriculum aims to produce veterinary graduates with well-rounded knowledge of both the science and the art of the veterinary profession, sound practical skills grounded in academic principles, and a firm commitment to ethics and integrity — so that graduates can practise to international professional standards and possess the Day One Competences sufficient to practise effectively and safely.

The curriculum was developed with the participation of stakeholders and an analysis of professional needs at both national and international levels, in order to refine its content, teaching and learning methods, and assessment system to suit the current context and support achievement of the program learning outcomes.

Scope of Learning

The curriculum comprehensively covers the knowledge and skills required for veterinary practice — including medicine, surgery, reproductive medicine, animal production medicine, pathology, necropsy and laboratory diagnosis, disease prevention and control, improvement of animal production efficiency, and animal welfare — spanning all animal types: companion animals, economic (farm) animals, and wildlife, as well as veterinary public health, food hygiene, and epidemiology.

The curriculum also increases the proportion of learning in workplaces and real practice settings, so that students can apply their knowledge and practise their skills in contexts close to real work — at the individual-animal, farm, and community levels — providing well-rounded preparation before entering the profession.

Overview of Study by Year

• Years 1–2: Study foundational preclinical courses to build an understanding of the structure and function of the animal body; study parasites and microorganisms relevant to animals; and learn the mechanisms of disease and the principles of diagnosis.
• Year 3 (Semester 1): Study pharmacology, the principles and processes of epidemiology, and diagnostic imaging, to strengthen understanding of drug use, disease monitoring and control, and the analysis of medical imaging data.
• Year 3 (Semester 2): Begin clinical courses — medicine, surgery, and theriogenology in companion animals — covering both theory and practice, with hands-on training at the Kasetsart University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Bangkhen Campus.
• Year 4: Study medicine, surgery, and theriogenology in economic animals, horses, and wildlife, developing skills in caring for a wide range of animal species.
• Year 5: Early in the year, study veterinary public health; then enter rotating clinical practice (rotations) across fields including small animals, ruminants, horses, swine, poultry, aquatic animals, pathology, and veterinary public health.
• Year 6: Divided into two main parts: (1) specialised clinical practice within the faculty, emphasising real hands-on practice under instructor supervision; and (2) Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), in which students train in real workplaces such as animal hospitals, clinics, farms, or animal-health agencies.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) — B.E. 2568

The Program Learning Outcomes of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program (Revised Edition B.E. 2568). Upon completion of the program, graduates are able to:

PLO1 Diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases in individual animals correctly, in accordance with academic principles and international professional standards.

• Identify abnormalities and reach a diagnosis correctly, in accordance with academic principles and professional standards.
• Plan treatment and disease prevention, manage animal health, and follow up on treatment and animal health — taking into account animal welfare, owner expectations, and available resources.
• Plan, assess, and carry out procedures for pain reduction, anaesthesia, surgery, and euthanasia.

PLO2 Conduct disease surveillance and manage animal health at the herd and national levels, correctly and in accordance with academic principles and international professional standards.

• Propose solutions to herd-level animal problems, taking into account principles of herd population management, epidemiology, law, economic conditions, and the real social context.
• Analyse risk and demonstrate the methods and processes of investigation, surveillance, reporting, and prevention and control of communicable, emerging, re-emerging, and transboundary diseases, appropriately for the current context.

PLO3 Propose One Health approaches for the safety of humans, animals, and the environment.

• Perform the veterinarian’s duties in food-safety standards along the entire food-production chain, from the farm to food processing, correctly.
• Promote the health and safety of patients, owners, and co-workers in the workplace.

PLO4 Communicate at work appropriately to the context and effectively.

• Communicate with those involved in the veterinary profession clearly, to the point, and appropriately for the situation.

PLO5 Select information technology and up-to-date knowledge sources to seek knowledge and develop oneself, acquiring life skills and work skills.

• Work together with colleagues and with professions related to veterinary work, including national animal-health agencies, and be aware of international working processes.
• Demonstrate continuous self-directed learning, and regularly plan a career path and self-development for sustainable competence.
• Assess credibility and select information sources according to the principles of evidence-based medicine.

PLO6 Conduct oneself under professional ethics.

• Perform duties in accordance with the Veterinary Council’s regulations on the code of ethics of the veterinary profession and related laws.
